Feeling Heavy

  • In the Classroom - Lesson 6

Lesson:

  • For this exercise, we are using Memory (Imagination, pretending) to relax. Memory is powerful. It is information stored in your body/mind. We can access that information for almost any use, almost any time.

  • Sleep is very important.

  • Many people, especially students, don’t get enough sleep.

  • One reason many of us don't sleep well because we are extra sensitive to stimuli. (I use an eye mask and earplugs and they work wonders!) Or maybe our senses are just over active and on over-drive (listening, smelling, feeling, looking...)

  •  This over-activity (over-stimulation) happens in our thoughts, too. During the day we may focus so intently on something that turning the night, when our mind can relax.

  • This over-activing, over-stimultion, is like when you step off a boat or a carnival ride. Your body gets so used to a motion.

  • Your mind, too. It naturally goes to certain places. Sometimes this results in the dreams we have. And sometimes it results in our mind waking up and not wanting to sleep. But we can help fix this by shifting our mind in the “sleep” direction.

  • Have you ever done the experiment of standing in a door way? You can describe this to your class, or have the students do this in your class to demonstrate. If you have time, it could be a fun demonstration.
