Balance - Seated

  • The spine has curves. When we sit with poor posture, when we slouch, we loose those curves and our spine cannot function properly. With prolonged poor posture, illness can result. The neck will stick out and the belly sticks out as the abdominal muscles weaken. The shoulders have to compensate and grow tired of doing more than their fair share in keeping the body upright.

  • Good posture takes effort, but it is energy and health-building effort.

Exercise:

  • In a chair:

    • You can sit on the edge of the chair so that their knees can lower and their pelvis can tilt to maintain the proper curves of the spine. Or,

    • You can sit all the way back in the chair, so that your whole back is supported, supporting the proper curves in the spine.

  • On the ground:

    • make sure there is a cushion under your spine so that your pelvis tilts and maintains the proper curves of the spine.

    • your knees, if they can be, placed on the ground and lower than the pelvis, act as a tripod. This gives further stability.
